Final Ancillary Task 2

This is my final, second, ancilary task and is to be printed at A4 size so as it takes up one whole page in an average magazine.

Final Production Evaluation: Enlarge to Read

The first three images are all answers to the first question, "In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?" and the fourth image answers the next three questions; "How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?", "What have you learned from your audience feedback?" and "How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?".

Fish Guts Photograph Contact Sheet

These pictures form the contact sheet from which I took the images which I used on both of my ancillary tasks. I used a few of these pictures, edited them in Photoshop and used them in a way in which made them eye catching, visually pleasing and a little less repulsive.

Ancillary Task 2: Feedback on First Draft

Below is a scanned image of my second ancillary task (the advertisement) with post-it notes on it, full of feedback from my class members. I then changed as many of these point as possible before handing in my final piece; in order to ensure that it followed all of the stylistic conventions of an advert of this type. Some of the changes I made to this feedback include; increasing font size, making the background clearer, using a different font for the web address, removing the exclamation mark and making the two logos in the bottom right the same size.

There were however, some changes which I did not change because I thought that it would be swaying away from the style models I have looked at prior to production of this piece. The main one of these was the idea of using a clearer picture in the background, instead of the red fish guts one which I have taken myself and used in both of my ancillary tasks. (The original pictures will be uploaded onto the blog in the next post.)

Ancillary Task 2- What I Did: The Breakdown

This is the breakdown of the vital parts of my second ancillary task and why I have done them the way I have. Below is the band logo which I put at the top of the advertisement. This is the same font as the CD cover, but the shadow which was black is now bright green, to fit in with the CD Case itself. This red and green theme is ongoing throughout my tasks, with my main production being the only exception. As you can also tell from the image below, the background is from the same set of photographs as those making up the CD case; however it has been edited to be red, faded and dark. In the center of the advertisement, I placed an image of the cover of my CD case which I duplicated and placed a darkened, discoloured version behind the original, just for extra detail.
This picture below is of the entire bottom section of the advert, it contains a couple of lines about the album, a release date and information about where it is available from, the necessary logos and web addresses. There are common features of an advert of this genre. The picture below is also not the most up to date one, but it is similar enough to not matter.

Ancillary Task 1 - CD Label

The image below is of the CD label I have made using the template. It currently has no details, but I intend to put on the band logo, album name, record company and the other very small print that you get on disks. I am unsure how to make the writing go around the outside of the disk though, as I think this will be very hard to accomplish. It is obvious that I made the label have the same artwork as the CD case, so it fits in with the whole Digipack.
The font below is the one that I have chosen to use on both, my CD case as well as my CD label. It is the band logo, so will also appear on the second ancillary task when it is completed. I is red so that it stands out upon the green background of the CD artwork. Red is also the colour used by a lot of other bands on this genre, due to its ability to stand out, as well as the connotations that the colour red carries. The drop shadow is not only for decoration, it helps the red show up better, because without it, the CD would just be a green and red blur or colour. To make this font, I used the "Chiller" font on Photoshop, and then used the liquify tool to emphasis the drips and blood-iness of the font. I used the layers tools and the "Hue and Saturation" tool to make the shadow.

The second image of the CD label (below) is how it is looking so far. All it has on it are the band logo and the album title. For the album title, I chose to use a font as similar as I could to the one on the front cover of the case. I continued the red and green theme on a bit. However, I think the album title needs a drop shadow to make it stand out a bit more.

Ancillary Task 2 - Research

This slideshow gives visual examples of advertisments of Digipacks of a gernre similar to my own and shows the regular features that you would expect to see.

Ancillary Task 1 - Creating a CD Label

To create the CD label, I used the image above, which I found at the following address: Google Images

The template helped me get the size of the CD label acurate and to scale, in order to see how the final piece looks.

Ancillary Task 1 - The Next Step

The next stage was to decide how to put this CD casing together and how to make it, whether it opens out into two, three or more, or which section to attach the disk so.

I decided to make the case so that it folds out into three and is made of cardboard. I even drew out a plan (to scale) on Photoshop and wrote on each section what would go there, just so it made my life easier when I came to put the final item together.

As you can see, the image has some white lines between the red cardboard faces - this is to allow for spines when I fold the card/paper up. This is only a rough plan of my CD case/Digipack.

Ancillary Task 1 - Research

This is a collection of style models and album covers of a similar genre, which will give me some ideas and inspiration as to what I should put in and on my product. I have annotated each one and highlighted any common elements such as typefaces, colour schemes and imagery. I also thought it would be a good idea to write a brief note about the connotations behind each element.
